Biography
Deborah was born on May 17, 1975, in Kingston, Jamaica. She discovered her love for music at about age 7 and became actively involved in her local church and school choir. One highlight in Deborah’s young life was attending many of the youth camps in Jamaica. These camps highly impacted her life; they helped her to understand the joy of being young and having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. These experiences led to her giving her life to the Lord. The camps were filled with great music and various competitions, including song-writing competitions. This was her first exposure to the art of writing songs that glorified God; however, its impact on her was not to be discovered until much later.
Deborah migrated to the United States and eventually attended college at the Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. She initially declared a major in Communications and later added Vocal Performance as a second degree. However, after completing her degree in Communications, Deborah decided to postpone the completion of her degree in Vocal Performance, opting to find a job that would utilize her communication skills. Yet, she never gave up on music.
Deborah’s first major job was at a national dental insurance company where she worked for seven years. While working at this company, she enrolled at a local community college in an effort to continue honing her musical abilities. During this time, she struggled with the challenge of trying to balance pursuing her dream of being involved in music ministry full-time and being a recording artist, while working full-time to support herself and assist her family. Even with these obstacles, she continued to sing at various local concerts, conferences, weddings and corporate events. She also continued to worship and minister at her local church, Pioneer Community Church, by playing bass guitar in the church band and organizing the Special Presentations for the weekly worship services.
In May of 2005, Deborah completed the recording of her first single, entitled “Cast All Your Cares”. She indicates that the best way she can describe the creation of this song is that it is “God-breathed”. “There are times,” she states, “when I need some encouragement and I listen to this song. It lifts me up in such a way that I feel that I did not write it but that God wrote it to me and through me.” Using this powerfully moving song, she dares to declare that feelings of hopelessness, depression, as well as suicidal thoughts confront everyone, even Christians. However, this song of hope affirms that God cares for us and wants us to cast on Him all the things that make us feel depressed and defeated. This first project has and continues to be a great source of encouragement for people who are hurting. It is certain that Deborah’s future projects will have similar and greater impact!
Currently, Deborah, following the strong call of Christ on her life, has taken a great step of faith and is studying Music full-time at a local college; she is also studying Marketing Management. Although the decision to pursue Music full-time has not been an easy one for various reasons, God has been faithful and has been meeting Deborah’s needs on this journey of faith. God is amazing and so faithful! So, Deborah continues on this journey, casting all her cares on Jesus, and is expectant about the great things God intends to do with her life!
